Cesena (FC)
In the province of Forli-Cesena has estimated area of 25.000 hectares of
growing field: 15.000 for fruit farming and 10.000 for vegetables farming.
The most common farm products include: peaches, apricots, plums, strawberries, kiwis,
apples, pears and lots of different types of cherries as well as potatoes,
beans, peas, lettuce, chicory leaves, turnip, tomatoes, giant cardoons and
purple artichokes from Romagna.
While some of
these cultivations are fully exploited, some others have become local or niche farming:
the Shallot of Romagna for example obtained the PGI certification (Protected
Geographical Indication).
This
farming tradition dates back in time in the history of this region.
Peach trees
have been grown since the 14th century and has lead to the growing
of the famous nectarine peach. Strawberries used to be a wild berry but has
become a widely and intensively grown in the Cesena area.
Cherries were firstly introduced
by Romans and grown since the Earliest Middle Ages, mostly in the Bidente river
valley, where they still are one of the most important farm products. There are
several varieties of cherries: moretta, durona, durella, corniola, duroncina,
primaticcia, marciana...
Our pears, peaches, and the nectarine
peaches have obtained the PGI certification.
All the other products
mentioned are part of the National list of traditional products form the province of Forlì
- Cesena.
